Island 2 of 6

Your Own Business

Build a system that earns whether you show up or not.

What this island is about

There are 2.73 million actively trading businesses in Australia as of June 2025, growing 2.5% in the past year. Small businesses - those with fewer than 20 employees - added over $590 billion of value to the Australian economy in 2023-24, representing one third of total GDP. The opportunity for the next generation lies partly in acquisition: an estimated 2.4 million baby boomer business owners need to exit their businesses over the next decade, and many will sell to the right buyer on vendor finance terms.

Where to start

  • 1

    Step 1 - Become Curious

Talk to three business owners and ask them - Why did you start (or buy) the business? - What's the hardest part? - What surprised you? - Would you do it again? You'll learn more from three honest conversations than from dozens of motivational videos.

  • 2

Step 2 - Learn to Spot Good Businesses

The next time you visit a café, mechanic, gym or online store, ask yourself: - Why do people choose this business? - What makes it different? - Who are its competitors? - Could it charge a little more? - Could it run without the owner for a week? Start seeing businesses as systems, not just places to buy things.

  • 3

Step 3 - Solve One Small Problem

Every successful business begins by solving a problem for someone. Look for a problem you've experienced yourself or one you see others facing regularly and ask - Is this problem common? - Would someone pay to solve it? - Can I create a better solution? You don't need a revolutionary idea. Many successful businesses improve something that already exists.

  • 4

    Step 4 - Sell Something

Before writing a business plan, try selling something. Making your first sale teaches lessons that no book can.

  • 5

    Step 5 - Build Systems

If people keep buying, ask yourself: How can I deliver this more consistently? Businesses become valuable when they rely less on memory and more on repeatable systems.

  • 6

Step 6 - Decide Your Path

Once you've experienced creating value for customers, consider which route suits you best. - Start a business from scratch. - Buy an existing business. - Join a growing business and learn from the inside before owning one. There isn't one right path. The best choice depends on your skills, interests and appetite for risk.

Campfire Conversation

The book gave you their story. These questions continue it.

  • What made you start (or not start) a business of your own?
  • What's the closest you came to quitting and why didn't you?
  • Who believed in you before the results did?
  • What did working for yourself teach you about yourself?
  • If I wanted to start something tomorrow, what's the first thing you'd tell me?

The book that turns lessons into a legacy

The Archipelago teaches the thinking. The Six Islands book is where a parent writes the story behind the money: the mistakes, the wins, and what they want their child to remember.
